This plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Direct exposure to harsh sunlight can damage its leaves, while too little light may weaken its structure. If natural light is limited, artificial lighting can help support its bioluminescent process. Maintaining the right balance of light will ensure both the health of the plant and the vibrancy of its glow.
Watering is another crucial factor in caring for your Camellia. The soil should be kept consistently moist but never soggy. Water the plant when the top two to three centimeters of soil feel dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause stress, affecting the plant’s ability to thrive. If possible, use filtered or rainwater, as Camellias prefer slightly acidic water. If tap water is your only option, allowing it to sit for a few hours before watering will help reduce chlorine levels. This plant also benefits from moderate to high humidity, so placing it near a humidity tray or misting it lightly can create an ideal environment.
Temperature plays a significant role in keeping the Camellia healthy. It flourishes in temperatures between 15 and 24°C (59-75°F). Exposure to extreme heat, cold drafts, or sudden temperature fluctuations should be avoided, as these conditions can stress the plant. Keeping it in a stable environment away from air conditioners, heaters, and cold breezes will ensure its continued growth.
The soil should be well-draining and slightly acidic, ideally with a mix of peat, perlite, and pine bark to support its root system. The pH level should remain between 5.5 and 6.5. Fertilization should be done sparingly, using a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer every four to six weeks during the growing season in spring and summer. Over-fertilization can negatively impact both the plant’s health and its bioluminescence, so moderation is key.
